Flight Change Policy

Changing dates, routes and names on a booking. Last updated July 29, 2026.

1. What a change costs

Three separate amounts can apply when you change a ticket:

  1. The airline's change penalty, set by the fare rules. Many US carriers have removed this on standard domestic fares, but it still applies to basic economy and most consolidator fares.
  2. The fare difference between your original ticket and the new flight. This is usually the largest component and cannot be waived by anyone.
  3. Our post-ticketing service fee, quoted to you before we do any work.

We confirm all three in writing before processing anything.

2. How to request a change

Call 1-888-555-0123. Changes are subject to live availability at the moment we make them, so working by phone avoids the seat disappearing mid-thread. If your departure is more than a week away you may also email support@theunitedsky.com with your booking reference.

3. Name corrections

Names must match your government-issued photo ID exactly. Airlines generally permit minor spelling corrections free of charge shortly after ticketing, but a ticket cannot be transferred to a different person. Check your confirmation the moment it arrives and tell us immediately if anything is wrong — a correction made in the first 24 hours is nearly always straightforward, and one made a week later often is not.

4. Date and route changes

  • Changes must normally be requested before the scheduled departure of the affected segment.
  • Once a segment has been flown, remaining segments are repriced, not simply moved.
  • A new fare difference applies whenever the new flight is priced higher; if it is priced lower, most non-refundable fares do not return the difference.
  • Changing the origin or destination city is a reissue and is more restricted.

5. Same-day changes and standby

Several US carriers offer same-day confirmed changes or standby on the day of travel, at the airport or through their app, usually for a modest fee or free for elite members. Where this is available on your ticket we will tell you — it is often cheaper than a formal change made in advance.

6. Airline-initiated schedule changes

If the airline moves your flight, you may be entitled to a free change to an alternative flight or a full refund, depending on the size of the change. We monitor bookings we have ticketed and will contact you when a significant change is filed. There is no service fee from us for handling an airline-initiated change.

7. Involuntary changes at the airport

During irregular operations — weather, mechanical delays, missed connections — the operating airline controls rebooking, and their agents at the gate can act faster than any agency. Get in the airline's queue first, then call us at 1-888-555-0123 and we will work the phones in parallel.

8. Seats, baggage and ancillaries

Paid seat assignments, baggage and other extras generally do not transfer to a new flight automatically and may need to be repurchased. Airline-imposed ancillary charges are non-refundable in most cases.
